Innovative solutions for your experimental Helicopter

We have finished the dyno testing of both the turbocharged and normally aspirated versions of the VPS engine. The dyno run power and torque results are shown below. Click on the lable to pull up the run sheets. Engine designer and builder Andrew Burr has done an exceptional job creating this new aircraft engine and the engines future looks very positive.

This first dyno sheet shows a snap shot during the mapping of the normally aspirated engine. Once the engine is installed on the test helicopter and can be fine tuned for that installation that final map will be downloaded onto all VPS engines that will be installed into Rotorway helicopters.

VPS Normally aspirated preliminary run data.

For testing the turbocharged version of the VPS engine Andrew set the maximum desired engine power on the dyno computer at 200 hp. The following graph shows in red all readings that exceeded this target setting. Andrew designed the engine power and torque to really kick in at the bottom of the green arc on the Rotorway main rotor system so that power would be there when needed should the pilot allow the rpm to drop into that low rpm area. The following graph dramatically shows that at an engine rpm of around 4100 which corresponds to the bottom of the green arc on the main rotor tach, both horsepower and torque dramatically kick in.

At present we do not intend to install the turbocharged version of our engine into any customer Rotorway helicopters due to the nearly 100 Hp in excess of the power that the stock Rotorway engine produces. This version of the engine is far too powerful to be flown by low time pilots who may inadvertantly apply too much power to the drive train. The following dyno run sheet shows the power produced while we were testing the integrity of our engine components at full power.
